Breast Cancer Situation in India

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide. It is also the second leading cause of death in women. In 2004, breast cancer claimed about 519, 000 lives across the globe.
In India, statistics about breast cancer in particular and cancer in general, are usually supplied by the National Cancer Registry Programme.
India is experiencing an era of remarkable socio-economic transformation.  Cancer is now the second leading cause of death in India; after cardiovascular disease.  Among women, cervical cancer is still the most frequently diagnosed cancer on the whole; but breast cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in urban Indian women.  This is largely due to the adoption of new lifestyles; and a change in reproductive behaviour.

The basic breast cancer cases in urban Indian women is 25-30; and the age adjusted rate is 30-35 new cases per 1,00,000 women per year. Breast cancer is increasing both in young (11per cent per decade) and old women (16per cent per decade). There are an estimated 1, 00,000-1, 25,000 new breast cancer cases in India every year.
The number of breast cancer cases in India is estimated to double by 2025. The age adjusted incidence of cervix cancer in urban India is 15-20 new cases per 1,00,000 women per year. The incidence of cervix cancer is 1.5 to 2 times higher in rural women. On the whole, it remains the commonest cancer in Indian women. Cancer of the cervix is decreasing in urban women at the rate of 18per cent per decade. Ovarian cancer incidence has remained stable in the past few decades.
